The draft legislation passed its first hurdle Monday when Cabinet ministers approved it. It now goes to the full parliament for a vote.

The bill was proposed after ultra-Orthodox demonstrators set off a furor by dressing young boys as Nazi concentration camp inmates during a protest against what they said was incitement against their community. Protesters have also called police "Nazis."

The government’s stake in Proton is again up for sale but will there be a suitable suitor?

Not a day goes by without the mainstream media hinting that somebody or some conglomerate is reportedly contemplating a bid for the government’s 42.7 per cent stake in Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional (Proton), the long ailing national car maker.

Proton advisor and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been quoted as saying that he hopes “a very rich company” will buy Proton.

In a contradiction in terms, he shamelessly confessed that he doesn’t care what happens to other companies – presumably the suitors – but he worries about what happens to Proton.

This is the same Mahathir, who not so long ago, joined the Proton management in vehemently opposing any foreign takeover of Proton.

Their myopic opposition has seen several billion ringgit from Petronas, where Mahathir is also advisor, thrown into the bottomless Proton pit. This is money mostly from Sabah and Sarawak where each state get a measly 5 per cent royalty from the wells in the inner waters and none from the outer waters where the bulk of the production is carried out.

Sadder, but hopefully now wiser, the recalcitrant Mahathir and the Proton management have no doubt realised that they can no longer rely on Petronas funding to continue to bail out Proton.

The tax-payers and people in Sabah and Sarawak would no longer stand for it unless Mahathir wants to be accused of being a “thief”.

The latest story is about Proton Holdings Bhd chairman Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh expressing an interest in the privatization of Proton. For starters, Proton is already private, so how much more private can it be?

Having said that, the question that can be raised is this: “Just who is Nadzmi?” No one is impressed with his so-called track record. Everyone knows that such track records are a dime-a-dozen in the aftermath of the New Economic Policy (1970-1990).

Most of the Nadzmi types make money in the re-shuffling of assets with the right hand buying from the left hand in incestuous arrangements.

In the most notorious of such arrangements, the federal government sold a thriving Malaysia Airlines (MAS) to Tajuddin Ramli whose only experience of the industry is a helicopter company with two machines. Tajuddin bought MAS at RM 4 a share.

Years later, the government bought virtually bankrupt MAS from a chastened Tajuddin at RM 8 a share. Several billion in public funds were flushed down the drain in the blink of an eye just to prove that some people can do business.

MAS, thrice bankrupt and headed for a fourth bankruptcy before Tony Fernandes (*another crony?) of Air Asia marched in through a (*heavily suspected) share-swap arrangement, is an example of the history of failures besetting corporatization, privatization and the GLC sector in Malaysia.

Old engine under new hood

The fact is that Proton is a hare-brained idea, indeed a scam of the highest order against the long-suffering Malaysian motorists, and should be wound up immediately.

Proton has survived for years by distorting the vehicle market in Malaysia and this is one option which it can no longer rely on, given the opening up of the market in Asean.

The thrust of car manufacturing is the engine which takes several years to develop and at least three years in commercial production to re-coup the cost of development. It’s from the fourth year that a model can make money but not for long since a new engine model would have to be introduced every three years to match market expectations.

No car manufacturer in the saloon range can break even unless it can sell at least a million units a year. This assumes that all other car components, besides the engine, are sourced from an efficient network of independent suppliers and vendors.

One million a year – think Toyota — is a number that Proton will never reach and this factor alone thereby underlines the sheer unviability of the so-called national car maker.

From its very first entry into the market until today, more than 30 years later, Proton has been peddling the first engine in cosmetic variations because it could not afford to design, neither did it have the engineering capability, to produce new engine models every three years.

Proton could of course buy new engineering designs from the Japanese, as it did with the first from Mitsubishi, but such purchases don’t come cheap.

Again, that assumes the Japanese are willing to part with such designs, which they are not. Why should the Japanese shoot themselves in the foot? They will never sell the latest engineering design but may be persuaded to part with something that they don’t really want.

Mitsubishi took Proton for a ride by selling it the engineering design of a model which had failed in the local and Singapore market. To add insult to injury, the Japanese sold Proton old manufacturing jigs by passing it off as new.

It’s also a known fact that Mitsubishi is a failing company in car manufacturing and has been failing for a long time, in fact from even before it teamed up with Proton.

The Proton Saga was Mitsubishi’s way of increasing its market share in Malaysia against competition from other Japanese makers and western companies.

Chasing the Volvo standard

In return, Mahathir sold the idea to us that we now had a national car, thanks to his Malaysia Boleh (Malaysia Can) slogan.

Why would any country need a national anything? No other country in the world has a national this and a national that.

Sweden has a population of only nine million, compared with Malaysia’s 26 million, and yet the country churns out Volvos and Saabs – the latter not doing so well – for the world market. Saab even makes fighter jets with some measure of success.

The only thing that Volvo, for example, manufactures is the engine. The rest of the components are sourced from within Sweden and worldwide.

Volvo is an example of how to make a car. Volvo is everything that Proton will never be capable of emulating.

Besides, Proton has so much political baggage in the form of the management and the network of inefficient local vendors all linked to Umno.

No global car manufacturer worth its salt will buy Proton and keep it going as it is.

That’s perhaps why people like Nadzmi are entering the picture so that the government can save face on a continuing dilemma.

Such people, as seen in the case of Tajuddin Ramli, are no solution. They will be begging the taxpayer for a bailout before long to make a killing in the process.

The team reveals that the truth behind the dead baby pill is horrific and disturbing.Chinese hospitals and abortion clinics that are connected to the business immediately notify pharmaceutical companies when a baby dies, mostly because of a still birth or an abortion.The companies purchase the baby corpses and store them in some family’s refrigerator to avoid suspicion.

Rebecca Leighton is accused of tampering with medical products

A nurse has appeared in court in connection with the deaths of five patients at a Stockport hospital.

Rebecca Leighton is accused of six counts of causing damage with intent to endanger life or being reckless as to whether life was being endangered.

She is alleged to have tampered with medical products, saline ampoules and saline bags at Stepping Hill Hospital.

The 27-year-old, of Heaviley in Stockport, was remanded in custody at Manchester magistrates' court.

Ms Leighton also faces one count of theft of medicine from the hospital.

She was arrested on Wednesday by police investigating the deaths of Tracey Arden, 44, Arnold Lancaster, 71, George Keep, 84, Derek Weaver, 83, and Vera Pearson, 84.

A longtime CIA officer who spent 21 years in the Middle East is predicting that Israel will bomb Iran this fall, dragging the United States into another major war and endangering U.S. military and civilian personnel (and other interests) throughout the Middle East and beyond.

Robert Baer made his prediction on the provocative KPFK Los Angeles show Background Briefing, hosted by Ian Masters.

Baer has had a storied career, including a stint in Iraq in the 1990s where he organized opposition to Saddam Hussein. (He was recalled after being accused of trying to organize Saddam’s assassination). Upon his retirement, he received a top decoration for meritorious service. Once upon a time, antipsychotics were reserved for a relatively small number of patients with hard-core psychiatric diagnoses - primarily schizophrenia and bipolar disorder - to treat such symptoms as delusions, hallucinations, or formal thought disorder. Today, it seems, everyone is taking antipsychotics. Parents are told that their unruly kids are in fact bipolar, and in need of anti-psychotics, while old people with dementia are dosed, in large numbers, with drugs once reserved largely for schizophrenics. Americans with symptoms ranging from chronic depression to anxiety to insomnia are now being prescribed anti-psychotics at rates that seem to indicate a national mass psychosis.

It is anything but a coincidence that the explosion in antipsychotic use coincides with the pharmaceutical industry's development of a new class of medications known as "atypical antipsychotics." Beginning with Zyprexa, Risperdal, and Seroquel in the 1990s, followed by Abilify in the early 2000s, these drugs were touted as being more effective than older antipsychotics like Haldol and Thorazine. More importantly, they lacked the most noxious side effects of the older drugs - in particular, the tremors and other motor control problems.

Several U.S. government and military employees are set for an embarrassing day at work today after hackers published the emails of over 25,000 subscribers to an x-rated porn website - including four who signed up using .gov and .mil addresses.

The government employees - one of whom signed up using his White House work address - include an Air National Guardsman and two army employees as well as officials from the Malaysian government.

The hack was carried out by a group calling themselves Lulz Security, or LulzSec, who obtained the email addresses and passwords from site Pron before publishing the complete list on Friday afternoon.

The group, who are self styled pranksters hacking and publishing details for 'fun', wrote on the top of the release: 'Hi! We like porn (sometimes), so these are email/password combinations from pron.com which we plundered for the lulz.'

LuzSec also told their followers to exploit the release for further embarrassment.

LulzSec urged their followers to tell friends and family members of those who had their details released by logging on to Facebook using the password and user name combinations.

The reason for this recent musing comes from revelations that a stash of pornography was found during the infamous Abbottabad raid in Pakistan by US Navy seals.

An investigation of the 500,000 workers by the Centre for Research on Multinational Companies and Students & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour (Sacom) found appalling conditions in the factories.

Excessive overtime was rife, despite a legal limit of 36 hours a month. One payslip showed a worker did 98 hours of overtime in one month, the Observer reported.
During peak periods of demand for the iPad, workers were made to take only one day off in 13.
Badly performing workers were humiliated in front of colleagues.
Workers are banned from talking and are made to stand up for their 12-hour shifts.

A man attending an illegal cockfight in California died after being stabbed in the leg by one of the birds, officials have said.

Mr Ochoa, reportedly a regular participant in organised cockfights, had already been fined for owning or training an animal for fighting, according to court records cited by the newspaper.

Though cockfighting is illegal in the US, California is a popular destination state for people involved in the sport as raising the gamecocks, organising matches and attending fights as a spectator are all classified as misdemeanours on the first offence, rather than more serious criminal offences in the state.

PC Air, which has yet to take to the skies, selected three "Ladyboys" (pic) in its first round of hiring this week to promote equal opportunities for what is dubbed the "third sex" in Thailand.

Peter Chan, the new airline's boss, is enthusiastic about his groundbreaking move because of the opportunities it would afford transsexuals.

"I think these people can have many careers – not just in the entertainment business – and many of them have a dream to be an air hostess," he said. "I just made their dream come true. Our society has changed. It's evolution. I'm a pioneer and I'm sure there will be other organisations following my idea."

One of the successful candidates was Thanyarat "Film" Jiraphatpakorn, who won the annual Miss Tiffany "katoey" beauty pageant in 2007. "At first I thought they would just take applications but not actually recruit us, as happened at other places before," said the 23-year-old, adding that she was delighted to have been chosen.

Thailand has the largest number of "katoeys" – as they are called in Thai – in the world, with the country's surgeons pioneering cheaper and quicker sex change operations because of the sky-high demand from men wishing to become women.

But PC Air did not make proof of sexual reassignment a criteria for the job, merely that the applicants possessed the necessary language skills and the potential to provide good service.

Many "katoeys" do not undergo sex change operations, either because of the expense or possible medical complications. But they dress as women, often taking birth control pills to reduce facial hair and grow breasts.

More than 100 transsexuals applied for the first places. The airline decided on a quota of three in the initial round of recruitment, where 17 men and ten women were also hired.

The transsexual flight attendants will wear special gold-coloured "third sex" name badges to help passengers and immigration staff to easily identify the gender they are faced with.

Several huge corporations own major networks and newspapers in the U.S. How much of the content do they control?

Everyone seems to know that the hand that feeds is the hand in charge.

“He who pays the piper gets to call the tune,” said Steve Rendall, a senior analyst at FAIR.

In the US, paying the piper and running the show are corporations. The tune they call, what Americans see, hear and read.

“It’s a money maker, it’s a cash cow. People don’t think that there is any money in the media. Aside from health care these days, the media is the industry of the 21st century,” said Georgetown University Professor Chris Chambers.

Half a century ago, fifty corporations ran the major networks and newspapers. Since then, a rapid concentration of media ownership has resulted in a near media monopoly spearheaded by a lucky few.

“The danger of this kind of media concentration is that it robs democracy of diversity, it robs viewers of being exposed to a wider range of views,” said media critic Danny Schechter.

Analysts say the U.S. is living in the golden age of media bias.

“It’s never been easier to find out exactly who is behind what, and where the conflict of interests are,” said media analyst TJ Walker.

Topping the list of owners is Rupert Murdoch and his empire News Corp.

Murdoch stands over FOX News, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Post – just to name a few.

General Electric, one of the largest military contractors in the US and Comcast, one of America’s largest cable providers are joined by the hip running NBC.

“The floor of the Hudson river is covered in carcinogenic PSBs – these toxigenic dangerous chemicals, that were put there by General Electric. General Electric owns NBC. NBC has not taken any trouble to report on this massive environmental story,” said Rendall.

With the innocent face of Mickey Mouse as their trademark, Disney is the proud owner of ABC.

“When ABC was bought by Disney and there were some ABC stories about improprieties at Disneyland and Disney World, and Disney killed those,” said Chambers.

CNN and Time magazine belong to Time Warner.

Joining the media giants is CBS Corporation towering over CBS News and Viacom – a global entertainment content company – running, among others, Comedy Central.

“They are supposed to afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted, but when you have journalists treading lightly around corporate and government elites, it almost defeats the purpose of their even existing,” Rendall said.

The purpose of existence for corporations is profit. Meaning, investors interests are placed ahead of anything else that would matter in journalism.

“Good business is bad journalism. Good journalism is bad business,” said Chambers.

Broadcaster Laura Flanders says counting on getting facts from the corporate media is simply naïve.

“We can’t be reliant on military contractors GE to bring us our news about the war, any more than we can be reliant upon television networks that are run by Disney to bring us the truth about what’s happening in our economy,” she explained.

As media are increasingly monopolized, the number of voices interested in bringing US viewers a little something called “truth” has decreased. As a result, instead of representing journalism, media have turned into loud mouthpieces for corporations.

Author Michael Parenti said not only are large news outlets owned by large corporations, they are also funded by additional corporations through paid advertising.

“There’s always a concern about pleasing your advertisers,” he said. “Americans are taught that we have a free and independent press, because the government doesn’t own it. But, in fact the ideological parameters around that press are very strict and very narrows, and they are set by the corporate owners and corporate advertisers. Those ideological parameters mean that you don’t say anything too critical about the world corporate system.”

Because of this system, argued Parenti, Americans are indoctrinated to think US policy is both correct, and “God’s gift to the world.”

Parenti explained, “It’s very hard to say anything critical about anybody who has any level of economic power.”

Radio host Alex Jones said objectivity in the media is impossible with such invested interests behind the content.

“You have the old dinosaur media, now owned by five or maybe six mega conglomerates, and they are really teaming up with the government and getting secrete payments,” he said. “It’s not just these five or six mega corporations that have all these other corporate subsidiaries and they won’t report on things that put them in a bad light, you have direct government payments of tax payer money secretly being funneled to them.”

Jones explained this is pushing many Americans away from corporate media. They are turning to the web for independent news sources.

“We’ve seen massive viewership drops in cable and broadcast TV and in newspapers and you’ve seen sites like infowars.com and other alternative media exploding,” he noted.

He said alternative media is now a threat to the corporate media, and corporate media outlets are lobbying the government to ban other media sources.

In December 2001 nine foreign nationals were removed from their families by police and taken to Belmarsh Prison in south east London. They have been held there ever since and still do not know why.

The detainees are unable to see the intelligence evidence against them and are confined to their cells for up to 22 hours a day. Their solicitors say they have been "entombed in concrete".

The men are being held under anti-terror laws bought in following September 11, which allow the home secretary to detain without trial foreign nationals he suspects of terrorism, but cannot deport because it would endanger their life.

To date a total of 17 foreigners have been detained, 11 of whom are still being held - mainly in Belmarsh. It has prompted human rights organisations to brand it "a Guantanamo in our own back yard".

'Faceless people'

"The similarities are striking and appalling," says human rights organisation Liberty.

"The lack of rights afforded to the men in both places undermines fundamental civil liberties."

- The cost of EU membership is unreasonably high and not worth it for the UK, argues Dr Lee Rotherham, a veteran from behind the scenes of UK-EU relations. Dr Lee Rotherham is an EU Policy Analyst at Taxpayers' Alliance and author of Ten Years On: Britain Without the European Union. He told RT that the UK's overall bill for EU membership, including direct and indirect costs for business and the whole country, could be up to £110 billion a year. However, he added that nobody knows that for sure because there has not been a gross benefit analysis of EU membership.

Therefore there is a big question over whether UK taxpayers' money is being spent effectively, particularly in regard to the unprecedented economic problems the financial crisis brought to Southern and Eastern Europe. Rotherham said: "The cost of the [EU] regulations, in terms of the UK, is greater than the actual value of the trade that it is meant to regulate. That's because the regulations cover ten per cent of the British economy, which is our exports to the EU, but actually cover 100 per cent of the UK economy. Eighty per cent is internal, ten percent is to the rest of the world." The whole economy has to pay the price of the 10 per cent regulated by the EU.

In real terms, the UK could buy a new hospital every three days with the money it spends on EU regulations and membership fees."The British taxpayer is funding taxes and naturally expects the money to be spent for the benefit of themselves, as fundamentally it is their money," Rotherham said. There are about 10 different levels of association with the EU, which are very similar in style, but some without the burdens, regulations and bureaucracy attached to them.

And there has to be an appropriate mechanism for the UK that is not necessarily full membership, believes Rotherham. "If you were a member of a golf club and your bill kept going up and you had to invite people to your house every Sunday, and you had to put obliges and a number of things were added to your conditions of being a member of this golf club -- you would not be happy with that," he said. But "it's the same principle."

The EU is just a part of the world and the UK, "rather than linking itself too closely with one part of the world trading system [EU], which is decreasing in importance, the UK or any European country should be involved in more pro-active free trade across the world rather than becoming a part of a regional association which highly risks becoming a protectionist bloc." "There are different models to offer, let's not pretend it is either the EU or oblivion, there are lots of choices around," assured Rotherham.

US charges 17 over '$42m theft' of Holocaust funds.

Seventeen people have been charged in the US with the theft of $42m of Holocaust compensation funds provided by the German government.

Prosecutors alleged the 17 fooled a non-profit-making group that distributes the funds into making 5,500 false payments.

Six of those charged work for the group - the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.

The chairman of the group said it was "outraged" at the alleged thefts.

It had detected the matter itself and contacted the FBI.

The United States of America remains the largest exporter of conventional weapons in the world, according to the latest study by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

The U.S account for 30% of global arms sales, or about $7 billion per year, for the period 2005-2009, SIPRI statement says. From 2005 to 2009, the U.S. sold one-third of its arm exports to South Korea (15%), Israel (13%) and the United Arab Emirates (11%). The top U.S. military equipments included JDAM guided bombs and RGM-84L Harpoon-2 anti-ship missiles, delivered to South Korea, in 2008.

A year-long investigation into private contractors in Afghanistan, carried out by the Senate Armed Services Committee, found, among other things, a contractor that had two alleged Iranian spies on its payroll, and another contractor who hired two rival Taliban-linked warlords, only to see one kill the other in an ambush.

The report (PDF, 32MB), which looked at 125 defense contracts over three years, provides further evidence that the coalition war effort in Afghanistan may be becoming a lucrative source of financing for the very groups the coalition is fighting.

Claims that security contractors have been paying bribes to the Taliban have been around for the better part of the year. And this summer the New York Times reported on evidence of "all-out collusion" between some security contractors and Afghan insurgents.

One contractor on which the new congressional report focuses extensively is ArmorGroup, which the report alleges hired two rival warlords, one of them Taliban-linked, to guard the Shindand airbase in Herat province. ArmorGroup referred to the two warlords as "Mr. White" and "Mr. Pink," in reference to the violent criminal characters in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs.
