Isil threatens to destroy Kaaba, says report

A member of the militant group Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isil) has said that they planned to capture Saudi Arabia and destroy the Kaaba in Mecca, according to a report in Turkish media.

The report quoted alleged Isis member Abu Turab Al Mugaddasi who apparently wrote on microblogging site Twitter: "If Allah wills, we will kill those who worship stones in Mecca and destroy the Kaaba. People go to Mecca to touch the stones, not for Allah."

The report said Isil, also known by the acronym Isis, plans to take control of the city of Arar in Saudi Arabia, which is very close to the Iraq border, and begins operations there.

The Huffington Post, however, reported that the Twitter account https://twitter.com/nm8smyh, which sent the original message, had been suspended.

"The authenticity of the account as belonging to an ISIS member has not been verified," it said in a brief note accompanying the report on Isil's alleged plans to destroy the Kaaba.

The Huffington Post said if the statement was indeed from an Isil member, it would be shocking as the group had been attempting to increase recruitment from Muslims worldwide by declaring the restoration of an Islamic Caliphate.

It quoted John L. Esposito, Professor of Religion and International Affairs and of Islamic Studies at Georgetown University, who said: "In terms of legitimacy – unless you're someone who's ready to join a terrorist group at this point, for the vast majority of Muslims there is no legitimacy with this group."

The Huffington Post said the threat to destroy the Kaaba reinforced Esposito's point, particularly as it comes during the holy month of Ramadan.

The terrorists had also threatened to assassinate the Shia leader Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, a report in the Deccan Chronicle said.

“At present, the Shiite religious leader in Iraq is a person named Ali Sistani who is a remnant of Safavid generation. We warn all Shiites that Sistani should leave Iraq, otherwise, we will kill him,” Isil was quoted as saying in a statement yesterday.

One of the security officials in Iraq’s Southern city of Najaf, where Ayatollah Sistani lives, told Adyan news that security measures have intensified outside the Shia leader’s home, and said, “People should be confident that the dirty hands of Wahhabists will never reach our Great religious leader.”

On June 24, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had caused consternation among many Malaysians when he reportedly urged Umno members to emulate the exploits of Isil which he said had defeated an Iraqi force outnumbering it.

“For example, when someone dares to fight to his death, he can even defeat a much bigger team,” he said, singling out the militant group, ISIL.

ISIL, a splinter group of al-Qaeda, has been classified as a terror organisation.

Malaysians are said to be linked to the group. One was believed to have been the suicide bomber who killed 25 Iraqi policemen last month while police here have arrested several local men, believed to be members of the group.

Two days after Najib's statement and following major backlash over his purported support for Isil, Putrajaya issued a statement saying that the prime minister had not indicated any support for the militant group and would not endorse any forms of violence and extremism.

A statement from the Prime Minister's Office said Najib's comments, which were made during his speech at Cheras Umno branch anniversary dinner, had been "taken out of all context".

“Isil was mentioned briefly and in passing, but it is important to note that the prime minister in no way indicated any support for Isil," a Putrajaya spokesperson was quoted as saying.

"Any allegation to the contrary is completely false," the statement had said.

In December 2011 bookseller and publisher Ahmad Faraz was found guilty for possessing and distributing books that purpotedly promoted terrorism and was sentenced to three years in prison. 

The books in question included works by Sheikh Abdullah Azzam, written at a time when Britain was openly supporting Afghan and foreign mujahideen against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, as well as the famous 1950s work of Syed Qutb, Milestones. This particular edition of Milestones was deemed to 'support terrorism' because it included appendices of thirteenth century exhortations to jihad which themselves were taken from the pre-Qutb syllabus of the Muslim Brotherhood.

At the time of Faraz's trial the Arab world had just been rocked by a series of revolutions that ousted western-backed dictators and brought supporters of the same Muslim Brotherhood into influence and power from Tunisia to Egypt, whose publictions had also once been regarded as 'terrorist' by their rulers.

Almost two and half years ago, I wrote about the murder of Abdul Manan Gul Rehman in a CIA black site facility known as the Salt Pit in Afghanistan. The news that he had been killed was received eight years after the fact.

In 2008, I had been fortunate enough to meet with the family of Gul Rehman in Peshawar as I was conducting investigations into enforced disappearances. At the time I had been informed by his family he had gone missing after having been accidentally picked up in 2002 in Islamabad from the home of Dr. Ghairat Baheer, the son-in-law of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. All the men in that home had been transferred to prisons in Afghanistan, with Baheer having been released three years later. The family wondered why their son/brother/father had still not been released in 2008, despite Baheer having been so many years earlier.

On returning to the UK, I followed up with colleagues from the ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) to inquire why Gul Rehman had not been registered on any prison lists. At CagePrisoners we had been documenting the names of those detained in US custody in detention centres such as Bagram and Guantanamo Bay, so to find that there was no mention of this unimportant former driver was particularly worrying.

It was not until 28 March 2010, that the world learnt of Gul Rehman's fate. On 20 November 2002, he had died in US custody after only one month in detention. According to the Associated Press (AP) investigation, he died from being left half naked in the cold, after being subjected to continual bouts of freezing temperatures.

At that time, I called to pass on my condolences to the family, only to be informed that they knew nothing of this news or the AP investigation. It turned out that no one had bothered to inform the family that Gul Rehman had died in custody, let alone return his body for them to be able to perform the funeral rites.

In 2008 an inquiry was launched following allegations that the CIA had tortured rendition victims Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Abu Zubaydah with the use of waterboarding in secret prisons and destroyed videotape evidence of those interrogations to safeguard the identities of the agents involved and, after the release of an internal CIA report which revealed that interrogators had threatened to kill and sexually assault members of prisoners’ families – a practice routinely carried out in pre-revolution Arab states and currently in places like Syria.

Federal prosecutor John Durham then submitted that a full criminal investigation into the deaths of two men – Gul Rehman and Madadel al-Jamedi (who died in CIA custody in Abu Ghraib) – be pursued, despite President Obama’s post (and pre)-inaugural promise of immunity from prosecution for any Bush-era CIA agents accused of breaking the rules whilst fighting terrorism.

Not surprisingly, Durham's inquiry concluded that there was not enough evidence to push for the prosecution of individuals in such cases, so no criminal charges would be brought against those who had been involved in the killing.

A statement released by US Attorney General, Eric Holder, gave weight to these findings,

"Based on the fully developed factual record concerning the two deaths, the Department has declined prosecution because the admissible evidence would not be sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction beyond a reasonable doubt."

Thus, according to the Department of Justice, despite there being a well established factual narrative of the murder of Gul Rehman, no charges would be brought against any individuals, thereby whitewashing any wrongdoing involved in the case.

While Eric Holder may be satisfied with the outcome of this investigation, he was very wrong when he said, "I continue to believe that our Nation will be better for it". Such half-hearted attempts at the apparent administration of justice only serve to highlight a hypocrisy endemic within the US justice system, where serious crimes and violations of the laws of war are either whitewashed completely, or result in severely disproportionate under-sentencing when it comes to holding authority to account. This is particularly relevant when juxtaposed with sentences given to Muslims within the federal justice system, such as Aafia Siddiqui who was given an 86-year sentence, despite not having harmed even one individual in an alleged shooting incident.

A maxim of the law states that the law must not just be done, but it must be seen to be done - what people like John Durham and Eric Holder do no understand, is that the US justice system is not seeing with the same eyes as the rest of the world.

State Dept. Poised to Remove Iranian Terror Group From Terror List

'Difficult Politically' for US to Keep MeK on the List

One of the founding members of the State Department’s list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations, the Iran-based cult the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MeK) is almost certain to be delisted in the next 60 days, in a move that is likely to dramatically increase tensions between the US and Iran.

The MeK was originally listed for its role in assassinating Americans in Shahist Iran, and has been petitioning for its removal. A number of politicians have been openly endorsing the organization, arguing that formal US backing for the organization would be a key step toward regime change in Iran.

Technically speaking, officials say, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton hasn’t made an official decision on the matter, but has promised to do so in the next 60 days. At the same time, they concede that it would be “difficult politically” not to remove the MeK from the list.

The move would be a great relief to several officials, including former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, who violated federal law by taking funds from a still-listed terrorist organization in return for giving speeches on their behalf. The MeK has been paying off top officials for years to endorse their removal from the terror list, offering $20,000 for a 20 minute speech of support.

Man in al-Qa'ida arrest wins £20,000 payout.

A student who was wrongfully arrested on suspicion of being a terrorist after downloading an edited copy of The al-Qa'ida Training Manual for his PhD course, has been paid £20,000 in compensation by police. 

 Rizwaan Sabir, 26, who is now researching domestic UK counter-terrorism policy at the University of Strathclyde, was held for seven days in 2008 by Nottinghamshire Police after downloading the document, which is available on Amazon, from a US government website while studying at the University of Nottingham. 

 "For more than three years, I have been fighting to clear my name and establish that the police were wrong to arrest me and put me through the tortuous experience I suffered at their hands," said Mr Sabir. He added that he cannot forget "all those other innocent people like me who have suffered at the hands of the police but do not have the chance or means to vindicate their names". 

 The Chief Constable of Nottinghamshire Police agreed to pay the compensation for Mr Sabir's....
